Maintenance / Grounds Officer - Animal Shelter | North Melbourne

Work somewhere that makes a real difference

Our client provides care and support to lost, stray and unwanted animals, helping give them a second chance. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team keeps the facility safe, clean and running smoothly - and that's where you come in.

We're currently seeking a hands-on Maintenance / Grounds Officer to support the day-to-day upkeep of a busy animal shelter in North Melbourne.

This is a practical, varied role where your work directly contributes to the wellbeing of animals, staff, volunteers and visitors.

What's on offer

  • Ongoing casual role - 4 to 5 days per week
  • 8:00am to 4:00pm (some flexibility)
  • $35.00 per hour (inclusive of casual loading)
  • Supportive, team-focused environment
  • Meaningful work in a purpose-driven organisation
  • Variety across indoor and outdoor tasks

About the role

This is a hands-on position where no two days are the same. You'll be responsible for maintaining outdoor areas, assisting with general repairs, and ensuring all facilities are safe, functional and well-presented.

Key responsibilities

Grounds & Gardening

  • Maintain lawns, garden beds and outdoor areas (mowing, weeding, pruning, watering)
  • Keep pathways, entrances and common areas clean and presentable
  • Remove green waste and general rubbish
  • Maintain outdoor animal exercise and enrichment areas

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Carry out minor repairs to fixtures, gates, fittings and kennels
  • Assist with general maintenance projects across the site
  • Ensure storage and work areas are clean, safe and organised

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow WHS procedures and report hazards
  • Safely use and maintain tools and equipment
  • Support safety checks and general facility upkeep

What we're looking for

Essential

  • Hands-on, proactive attitude
  • Reliable and able to work independently or within a team
  • Practical problem-solving skills
  • Able to adapt to a changing, fast-paced environment

Desirable

  • Previous experience in maintenance, handyman or trade-related roles
  • Physically fit and capable of lifting up to 20kg
